Alberta has officially opened applications for its “Alberta is Calling: Moving Bonus” program, offering a one-time, tax-free $5,000 payment to skilled tradespeople who relocated to the province between May 1 and December 31, 2024. This initiative aims to attract up to 2,000 qualified workers to support Alberta’s growing economy.
What Is the Moving Bonus?
The Moving Bonus is a refundable tax credit designed to help offset relocation costs for skilled trades professionals. It is part of Alberta’s broader strategy to address labor shortages in key trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, and electrical work. The total program budget is $10 million, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis .
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Have moved to Alberta between May 1 and December 31, 2024
- Have resided in Alberta for at least 12 consecutive months at the time of application
- Be a tax resident of Alberta as of December 31, 2024, with a 2024 Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency
- Be employed or self-employed in an eligible skilled trade
Employed Applicants must:
- Work full-time (minimum 30 hours per week or 130 hours per month)
- Provide proof of employment, such as pay stubs or an employment verification
Self-Employed Applicants must:
- Demonstrate at least $2,000 in gross revenue from their trade in the month prior to application
- Provide documentation like invoices or contracts to validate business activity

Additional Information
- Recipients will not be taxed on the $5,000 bonus.
- Payments will be made via direct deposit or cheque.
