Ireland Granted Nearly 40,000 Work Permits in 2024

Irish authorities have decided on 42,910 applications for work permits in 2024, the majority of which were approved.

According to data published by the Irish Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, 39,390 work permits were granted to foreign workers last year, indicating that 91.8 per cent of the total were approved, Schengen.News reports. 

On the other hand, 5.72 per cent of work permit requests were refused, representing 2,456 applications, while 2.48 per cent or 1,064 were withdrawn. 

Indians Obtained 35% of All Work Permits Ireland Issued Last Year 
Indians were issued 13,566 permits for employment purposes in 2024, representing 35 per cent of all granted permits during this period. Applicants from Brazil and the Philippines follow, with 4,553 and 4,049 permits issued, respectively. 

The list of top ten nationalities with the most work permits granted in 2024 is concluded with Chinese (1,962), Pakistanis (1,742), South Africans (1,631), Americans (1,119), Nigerians (974), Zimbabweans (971) and Malaysians (662). 

Regarding the nationality that had the most rejected permits, Brazilians have the most refusals. A total of 618 permits were rejected, representing 25 per cent of all permits that were rejected. 

However, in terms of rejection rates being higher in proportion to the number of cases that were decided on, Bolivia stood out, with 15.79 per cent of requests filed from applicants of this country being rejected.

Most Work Permits Were Granted to Health & Social Workers 
As the data reveals, the highest number of work permits were issued to workers in the healthcare and social work sectors – a total of 12,501 permits from a total of 39,390, representing a share of 31.7 per cent. 

The second and third most popular sectors for work permit applicants were the information and communication activities, in addition to the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors. In 2024, most permits were granted to the agriculture sector in Ireland. The Irish authorities granted 6,788 (17.2 per cent) and 3,625 (9.2 per cent) work permits to applicants for these two respective sectors. 

Throughout the year 2024, a similar number of permits was issued every month, with the exception of July, when over 4,000 were granted, compared to other months, during which around 3,000 permits were issued. In March, September, October and December, an average of 2,900 permits were granted to foreign workers.
