Ireland has seen an exponential rise in Indian-origin citizens over the past few years. Census figures indicate a nearly 300% jump over the last decade --- from 11,465 to 45,449
Ireland has become an increasingly popular place for Indian immigrants in recent years with the population growing steadily since Brexit. But the change has also irked many locals amid a severe housing crisis, skyrocketing rental costs and increasing homelessness. Against this backdrop a social media user sparked heated debate this week after sharing a video of a purportedly Indian family moving into their newly purchased home.
“An Indian family showcases their new home in Dublin. Ireland has opened its borders to a ridiculous 54,000 Indians in 2 years approximately. In the same time frame Ireland has only built 63,000 homes. Open borders is depriving generations of Irish families of home ownership. This isn’t sensible migration, it isn’t sustainable. It needs to stop,” the X user claimed.
The clip shared online showed the family of three exultantly unlocking their front door and entering their new house. It was not immediately clear when and where the clip had been taken or whether the people in the video were indeed Indian. While the parents can be heard speaking in Hindi in the short excerpt, people in the comments section also suggested that they might hail from Pakistan.
Ireland has seen an exponential rise in Indian-origin citizens over the past few years. Census figures indicate a nearly 300% jump over the last decade — from 11,465 to 45,449. According to reports, more than 10,000 people from the country had arrived in the 12 months leading up to the April 2022 census. Indians are now the third biggest foreign national group on the island, trailing only Polish and UK citizens.
The social media post ha since sparked extensive discussion with some comments accusing the original post of bias. Others laid the blame for the situation with the Irish government,
“If the man has the home as a free social security benefit on Irish tax payers money, it’s right to complain! If he’s paid for his home, why are you complaining?!” asked one user.
“Shocking tweet. You’re villainising a family who are more than likely working hard and obviously have the proper documentation to be here. Which would suggest they’re offering something to our community. You’re an embarrassment,” fumed another.
