Portugal Sees 240% Increase in Residence Permits Granted to Brazilians

A recent report from Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) has shown that the number of residence permits granted to Brazilians has seen a significant year-on-year surge.

According to AIMA, the number of residence permits granted by Portugal to Brazilian citizens has increased by 240 per cent in 2023 compared to 2022, Schengen.News reports.

Data show that in 2022, Portugal granted a total of 43,313 residence permits to Brazilians. On the other hand, in 2023, the country granted 147,262 residence permits to this nationality group, marking a staggering increase.

Commenting on this increase, AIMA said that it was driven by the CPLP mobility agreement, which was signed back in 2021 and implemented throughout 2022. The same noted that of the total number of residence permits granted to Brazilians last year, 108,232 were under the CPLP agreement.

In addition to the above-mentioned, AIMA noted that nationals of the other CPLP countries were also granted a high number of residence permits, with them accounting for 45.3 per cent of new residence permits.

Foreign nationals need residence permits for long stays in Portugal. The residence permit gives them the right to live in the country, regardless of their purposes of stay.

Brazil Represents Largest Foreign Community in Portugal
As Investing explains, Brazil has been representing the largest foreign community in Portugal for years.

Official figures show that in 2023, there were a total of 1,044,606 foreign nationals residing in Portugal, with 35.3 per cent of them being from Brazil. The number of Brazilians residing in Portugal increased from 239,744 in 2022 to 368,449 in 2023.

However, despite such numbers, it is believed that a larger proportion of Brazilian citizens reside in Portugal, but since some might be staying in the country without documentation, only these data are available.

Just recently, the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the country has issued a large number of work visas to Brazilians, too.

As per data shared by the Ministry, in the first eight months of 2024, Portugal granted a total of 7,200 work visas to Brazilian citizens.

This number of work visas granted to Brazilians between January and August 2024 represents a 20 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
