Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has officially launched its participation in Canada's new Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP), unveiling a comprehensive list of 25 eligible occupations for 2025. This initiative aims to attract skilled foreign workers to address local labor shortages and bolster the city's economic growth.
Priority Sectors and Eligible Occupations
The RCIP focuses on five key sectors in Sault Ste. Marie:
1. Health
2. Education, Law, Social, Community, and Government Services
3. Sales and Service
4. Trades and Transport
5. Manufacturing and Utilities
Within these sectors, the following occupations, identified by their National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes, are eligible:
• Health Sector:
o NOC 31302 – Nurse Practitioners
o NOC 32101 – Licensed Practical Nurses
o NOC 32124 – Pharmacy Technicians
o NOC 44101 – Personal Support Workers
• Education and Social Services:
o NOC 41301 – Therapists in Counseling and Related Specialized Areas
o NOC 42201 – Social and Community Service Workers
o NOC 42202 – Early Childhood Educators and Assistants
• Engineering and Technical Fields:
o NOC 21301 – Mechanical Engineers
o NOC 21310 – Electrical and Electronics Engineers
o NOC 22212 – Drafting Technologists and Technicians
o NOC 22301 – Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians

Note: Certain occupations have annual caps and employer-specific restrictions. For instance, the Food Service Supervisor role is capped at 25 applicants annually, with no more than 2 per employer, applicable only to hotels and dine-in restaurants.
2025 Intake Periods
Applications for the RCIP in Sault Ste. Marie will be accepted during the following two-week periods in 2025:
• April 27 – May 10
• May 25 – June 7
• June 22 – July 5
• July 20 – August 2
• August 17 – August 30
• September 14 – September 27
• October 12 – October 25
• November 9 – November 22
Each intake window provides prospective applicants ample time to prepare and submit their applications.
About the RCIP
The Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) is a federal initiative launched in January 2025, replacing the previous Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP). It aims to address labor shortages in rural and smaller communities by providing a pathway to permanent residency for skilled foreign workers. Sault Ste. Marie is among the 18 communities selected for this program and has been allocated 300 spots for 2025.
How to Apply
To apply under the RCIP in Sault Ste. Marie:
1. Secure a Valid Job Offer: Obtain a full-time, permanent job offer from an employer in Sault Ste. Marie in one of the eligible occupations.
2. Gather Required Documents: Prepare necessary documentation, including proof of work experience, language proficiency (e.g., IELTS, CELPIP), educational credentials, and settlement funds.
3. Submit Application: Apply through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) online portal during the specified intake periods.
4. Community Recommendation: Obtain a recommendation letter from the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation.
5. Await Processing: After submission, IRCC will process the application, which may take several months. Successful applicants will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and an LMIA-exempt work permit.
