Ukraine’s decision to halt Russian gas supplies has led to questioning Ukraine’s bilateral ties with Slovakia.
Furthermore, Bratislava said that if Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wants to continue this approach towards Slovakia, it may reconsider support for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, Schengen.News reports.
Through a statement, the ruling party in Slovakia, Hlas-SD, said that if Zelenskyy wants to be seen as a partner, he must act accordingly. The party also mentioned the political, military and humanitarian aid offered to Ukraine during the Russian invasion.
In order to ease tensions, a meeting between Slovakia, Ukraine, and European Commission officials was scheduled for Tuesday; however, it has been rescheduled for Thursday, according to Euractiv.
2025 Should Be as Productive in Negotiations as Ukraine Needs It to Be
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a video address, said on January 7, 2025, that several meetings have been held, among them the accession of Ukraine to the EU.
He said that during discussions for Ukraine’s EU membership, there were also speakers from the Verkhovna Rada, government officials, and the office team.
Ukraine’s President emphasised that both Poland and Denmark are very responsible partners in his country.
His comments came after Poland took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from Hungary on January 1, 2025, for the first half of this year, and in the second half, it will be held by Denmark.
According to a report from Ukrinform, Ukraine, together with Poland and Denmark, has drawn up a plan to open EU membership talks in the first and second half of 2025.
Ukraine-EU Accession Talks on Membership Chapters May Begin in Early 2025
In December 2024, the President of the European Union, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU should be ready to open negotiations with Ukraine on the fundamentals cluster in early 2025 and some other clusters by the end of 2024.
Von der Leyen said that Ukraine has made tremendous progress toward EU accession.
