Booking With a Refundable Option:

Basically, a dummy ticket mimics a real ticket, but it does not hold an actual seat reservation on a flight.

No, there is no need to buy a flight ticket before you apply for a Schengen visa. 

Since there is no guarantee that you will have your visa approved, you risk losing the flight ticket and your money in case your visa is not approved.

Instead, you present your flight itinerary, which you can book without paying the full price of the travel ticket.
